Quick answer

A guide is not required, and you will not necessarily get lost, but a licensed guide makes the first day far easier and helps you avoid scams. Look for the official photo ID badge, agree the price and the length in advance, and agree no shopping stops.

Do you really need one?

The Fez medina is the largest car free urban zone in the world, with more than 9,000 lanes. You can explore it alone, but in my experience a guide earns their fee on the first day, when you want history, access to places and a safe way to say no to touts.

How to recognise a licensed guide

  • Official guides wear a photo ID on a lanyard.
  • Guiding is regulated by Moroccan law 05 12, and unlicensed guiding can be penalised.
  • Do not accept a guide who approaches you in the street.
  • Book through your hotel or a company you trust.

You can check any guide yourself. The Ministry of Tourism publishes the official list of licensed tourist guides (Liste des Guides de Tourisme agréés), which you can search by name and by category. There are two categories of official guide in Morocco:

  • Guide des villes et des circuits touristiques (GVCT), for cities, medinas, monuments and touring routes. This is the license you want in Fez.
  • Guide des espaces naturels (GEN), for mountains, deserts and other natural areas, such as Atlas treks.

Every licensed guide receives a professional card and a badge from the Ministry, renewed every three years. Ask to see the badge and compare the name and category with the Ministry list. My own license is GVCT2299.

Prices

With me, a private guided visit of the Fez medina is from 500 MAD for a half day and from 800 MAD for a full day. The price is for your group, not per person, and I confirm it in writing before the day. Entry fees to museums and monuments are extra. Ask me for a quote for your dates.

What a guided day covers

  • The history of the city from the Idrisids to the Marinids, told on the spot.
  • Monuments in a logical order, so you never walk the same lane twice.
  • Places you would not find alone: a weaver behind a small door, a communal bread oven, a fondouk being restored.
  • Help with reading menus, prices and customs, and a quick way through the busy lanes.
  • A good lunch place, chosen for you and not for a commission.

Medina numbers

Fez el Bali is home to tens of thousands of people. Its lanes are often less than two metres wide, which is why everything, from gas bottles to building materials, still moves by donkey, mule and handcart. Street names and signs are few, and map apps lose the signal between high walls, which is exactly why a first visit with a guide is so much easier.
